Health and Safety more

Our club does not practice full contact. Students must be aware of what an appropriate distance is. This expected of graded students and beginners will be instructed on this accordingly. Approach a sensei if you are unsure about this.

Students train in bare feet. Members are asked to maintain short finger and toe nails.

No watches or jewelry are to be worn during training. Any jewelry which cannot be removed must be taped over. There are no exceptions to this rule.

To avoid injury we recommend students wear Karate Gis or sports clothing of an appropriate length.

Be aware that you may leave the line up at any time to get a drink but a student may not leave the dojo without first informing the Sensei. This is extremely important especially if a student feels faint or unwell, or is injured. The sensei must be made aware of this.

Dojo Etiquette more

(Beginners to Karate may find this information useful, but are not expected to know this for their first classes)

All members bow (Rei) on entering or leaving the dojo.

When Sensei signals training has begun; students line up in grade order.

The class kneel (seiza) on instruction and bow to the sensei (sensei ni rei) to signify that class has begun.

Mokso is an instruction to remain in Seiza for a period of meditation and to compose oneself for, or reflect on, training.

A member who arrives after training has begun will execute a full kneeling bow and waits for permission to join the class. If the class warm-up has finished it is recommended that students stretch before joining class.

Instructions and demonstrations from the instructor may be acknowledged with a standing Rei and answered ?s?(I understand).

To show respect, members bow to eat other before or after partner work.

At the end of a class students kneel (seiza) on instruction and bow to the sensei. The senior student may thank the Sensei formally (domo arigato gazaimasu) and ask for a final bow where student can thank the sensei. A final bow signifies the end of class.
